Why I Don’t Buy Packaged Cereal

Homemade granola

Packaged cereal is often seen as the default.

It’s quick, easy, and designed to appeal to children, so it makes sense why it becomes part of most homes.

In our case, it’s just never been something we’ve brought in.

Not as a strict rule, but more as a natural choice based on how we prefer to eat.

From what I’ve observed, breakfast sets the tone for the day more than people realise.

If it’s something that’s overly processed or doesn’t keep anyone full, the rest of the morning tends to feel a bit unsettled.

So instead, we’ve always leaned towards simpler options made from basic ingredients.

Things like:

  • homemade granola
  • toast with good toppings
  • eggs
  • yoghurt with fruit

None of these are complicated, and they don’t take significantly more time once they’re part of your rhythm.

Granola, for example, is something I’ll make in a batch and use across the week.

What I’ve found is that these kinds of breakfasts feel more grounding.

They tend to keep everyone satisfied for longer, and there’s less of that mid-morning drop in energy.

There’s also a quieter benefit in children being around how food is made.

Even in small ways—mixing something, helping prepare, or just watching—it builds a different understanding of food.

Breakfast becomes something that’s part of the home, not something that comes out of a box.

This isn’t about doing things perfectly, or never choosing convenience.

It’s just about what becomes normal.

And once simple, from-scratch options are the norm, there’s very little need to rely on anything else.
